Before the 1920s, women did not work outside of the household, mostly cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children if there were any. During the pre- war era , women began to take on completely roles, even those that men once held.
As war was rapidly approaching, women joined the military and took the role of nurses, while other women as men began to get drafted entered industrial plants for the first time. These jobs consisted of shipment collectors, accountants, telephone operators, and steel mill workers.
They were also working in dangerous day to day jobs building a munitions and working with TNT that was a life threatening especially to the fact that many of these factories were enemy targets.

Finally after decades of suffrage in 1920 the 19th amendment was passed and it gave women the right to vote.
Women's role in society
As the 1920s began to run its course, it brought new and exciting cultural innovations that shifted women's attention from politics into social life which consisted of new fashion trends, products, and sexier images.
Political success along with having more time to themselves to spend during this era challenged the traditional ideas of a woman's role in society.
